Green Glass Splashback

The green glass splashback with adjoining strips has been designed to create a striking splash of colour to this kitchen/diner. The exposed edges have been bevelled and hand polished with no edge trims needed. The original green bottle glass has undergone a special firing cycle that creates a ray of green hues that allows for the material to practically come alive. The randomised pattern of the glass fragments and colours invites viewers to study the glass and appreciate the natural beauty and spontaneous texture, and it can be compared with any other organic material with its organic look.

The splashback has been fitted by a local tradesman using a clear adhesive between the joints. A hydrophobic anti fingerprint treatment has also been applied to the surface to allow for easy cleaning.

What the homeowners said

We thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with Tyra on our bottle green recycled glass splashbacks for our kitchen / dining refurb.

Complementing the orange formica worktop the splashbacks really inject the colours and sense of fun we were looking for in the area where we spend so much of our time.

Along with the colour, the mottled nature and even the texture of the recycled material is something we couldn’t find in other materials, and it’s fantastic that the environmental credentials of the material is both intrinsic to and enhances the aesthetic, it’s also lovely seeing the light change on the glass at different times of the day.

Tyra was incredibly helpful throughout the whole process, providing samples for the initial selection, along with invaluable technical insight into the size of the panels, edge detailing, fixing methods even down to the logistics of the delivery… We even enjoyed a tour of the workshop.

We would thoroughly recommend Tyra for bespoke environmentally friendly recycled glass splashbacks.”

White Glass Splashback

Three large panels made from recycled glass have been created as a kitchen splashback. The panels are made from one 100% waste glass that has been locally sourced, processed and manufactured. The panels were designed to fit the sizes of the kitchen cupboards above with a width of 700 mm either side and 920 mm in the centre and height a of 760 mm. The bottom edge of the panels and the two outer sides have been bevelled and polished to create a final luxurious finish. The panels have a clear silicon 1 mm grout line between them and a moonlight white filler at the top beneath the cupboards.

The glass used for these panels has been carefully selected and designed into the panels to emphasize the subtle range of hues that can be seen in the original glass bottles. Pale hues such as grey, green, pink, blue and white have been deliberately utilized to create an attractive visual effect which can be matched with any surrounding colours of the interior.

Installation by Creighton Higginson. Creighton is a local professional tiler who did an excellent job in installing these three panels including making sure the wall had been thoroughly prepared before they were ready for fitting. The panels with a one millimeter clear silicon grout line between them and a moonlight white filler at the top to closely match the colour of the recycled glass panels.

FAQs

What sizes can you make and what are the thickness?

The panels can be made to your specification both in thickness and size. The thickness can vary between 7mm to 25mm (+/-2mm). Please note that the panels are hand made and small variations of thickness will occur. The maximum size of the panels are about 900mm by 700mm.

How are the panels made?

The glass bottles has been locally sourced, cleaned and labels removed. They are then carefully colour separated and crushed. The crushed glass is then separated into four different sizes namely, large, medium, small and powder. The glass is then ready to be made into the panels or tiles using low temperature fusion technique in a flatbed kiln. The glass transform into a crystalline material and no additives is used to bond the glass. It is 100% bottle glass.

What colours do you make?

The main colours available is green, white, aqua, amber and mixed green, with a limited availability of Cobalt blue and turquoise (Bombay Sapphire bottles). We can make any other colour using addition of glass frits for the 10x10cm tiles.

Do you design with a mixture of colours?

Yes, it is possible to combine different coloured glass bottles together and make designs and patterns with it.

Can you cut curved lines and holes for power sockets?

Yes, you can have a bespoke curved lined design and cut-outs for power sockets. This will be made using waterjet technology. Please make sure you specify this when you discuss your design. The panels themselves cannot be curved and has to be flat.

Do I need edge trims for the glass panels?

If the edge is exposed in your kitchen you will have a polished finish and there is no need for an edge trim. It is also a bevelled edge, but this in only for straight cut edges.

How much does it cost?

Each commission will be costed individually and the cost is depended of sizes of the panels, thickness, design and edge finish and if you enquire cut-outs for power socket etc. As a going rate one panel will cost between £300-500 each.

How long will it take from when I order until it is finish?

It will normally take 28 days from ordering the glass and this is dependent of kiln time which cannot be speeded up.

Can I cut the glass myself?

It is not recommended to cut the glass yourself as it it can be very difficult to get a clean cut. If you were to cut it yourself, we would recommend to use a wet diamond saw and to make sure the the glass is water-cooled when cutting.

Do you install the kitchen tiles or splashback panels?

We do not install the panels but any professional tiler will be able to fit the panels. If you live in South Wales we recommend Creighton Higginson . We recommend to use flexible white S1 adhesive. Tiles should be back buttered with adhesive using a 3mm trowel.

Do you deliver?

Yes, we can do delivery in South Wales. We have also developed a good relationship with a Door-to-door currier that will handle your panels with great care and professional attention which will deliver anywhere in UK mainland. They are insured and will deliver the panels to your preferred date and time. Check out Catch and Despatch Delivery Services. Please ask for a quotation.
