The making of the Reception Desk
How it all started!
The IQ reception desk at University of Wales Trinity Saint David with backlight poanels made from recycled glass bottles.
The IQ Faculty reception desk a stand as a landmark project that transforms policy into practice, creatively embedding the principles of the Well-being of Future Generations Act into the physical and cultural fabric of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
Initiated through Tyra Oseng-Rees’s research proposal to Pro-vice Chancellor Jane Davidson and realised via a pioneering university collaboration, the project aligned three core objectives: enhancing the student learning experience, fostering a cross-disciplinary research community, and supporting the development of the commercialisation of the new and innovative material, fused recycled glass.
More than a desk, it is a system-aware story told through material and partnership. Locally made, circular in its ethos, and emotionally resonant in its presence, the piece honours place and people while demonstrating how “the five ways of working” can lead in co-creating sustainable futures.
A set of interviews with the key voices behind the project: Jane Davidson, architect lecturer Ian Standen, project manager Mike Bessel, and two students Jana Kleprlikova and David Halley from UWTSD who helped shape its journey from concept to completion.
